We enjoyed our visit with our friends in Oxford. This couple live in a very old village called Weston on the Green. Their house is named The Warren; it is a name they had to get permission to use as the house is very old and was fomerly called The Chalet. Because this blog works backwards, I don't always get the info and pix in the right order. Know you'll figure it out.
Their neighbor's house has a thatched roof. They are required to keep the roof thatch, which can be an enormous expense every 25 years, or so. We walked the entire town in less than half an hour.
After our country visit, we visited our friend just outside the city of Oxford. What a beautiful old city - what history.

England's pubs are a culture unto themselves; some of them are over 500 years old. A pub lunch consists of your favorite beverage, hot soup, or fish and chips, or a shepards pie, or some other delicious home-cooked meal at a very reasonable price. The Turf Pub is Oxford's most famous; hidden down a side street and alley, it's where Lewis Carrol and other famous authors/teachers of his age enjoyed spending time. I love the draft hard cider (Bob's the beer man), and enjoyed a half pint and delicious soup with crusty bread for lunch the afternoon we were there. Unfortunately, many pubs are closing because the smoking laws have caught up with them, and they don't have any outdoor room to provide a smoking area. Thus business has gone down the tubes and they are forced to close.
