One cool day at last! We are in South Dakota, and it's as windy as usual, but the temps didn't reach 90, so we were grateful for the break. There has been a heat index of 100+ for days. This is our 4th or 5th trip across S.D. Every time, we have seen the sign for the Corn Palace, but we decided each time to just keep going. Our trip today ended at a lovely, shady little campground in Salem, SD, a mere 35 miles from the Corn Palace. Since it was cool and we had stopped early, we decided to take the trip. It is really an amazing creation! At this time of year, we are seeing a work in progress; when the corn is plentiful later in the year, the palace for 2009 will be completed around August. The design is different every year, and it has been going on since 1892! The pictures are created with varied kinds of corn on the cob by local artists. If you is on hand at the right time, you can watch the creation in progress. You can probably get more info. on Google. We are sorry we waited so long to see it.
