If you go to the NC State Parks website and select New River, you will see this beautiful aerial view of the river. I have it on my pc, by permission. As you can see, it is truly a lovely sight to behold. On a nice weekend, the river is full of canoes, kayaks, and assorted tubes. One can float as they wish and enjoy the scenery, birds, and quiet with absence of traffic and mechanical interference. The river is shallow, so no motors - which means no power boats with skiers, and no jet skis. These toys are a lot of fun, but it is always nice to escape to quiet sometimes.New River State Park IS the river, with the park owning some of the land along the 26-mile stretch. There are 3 campgrounds. We are the headquarters, with 2 campgrounds - one primitive near the river, and one with electric and some full hookups near the visitor's center. Our campground and the Visitor's center are just over 3 years old, even tho' they were in the plans in the 60's. It took that long to acquire the land and funds, and that's another story.
The northernmost campground, near the Virginia border, is called Allegheny Access and is only accessible by water, and the sites are primitive. If one goes there, there has to be an arrangement to be picked up, because it cannot be reached by motor vehicle.
More cellular towers have been constructed in the area and one can get cell service. When we first came here 3 years ago, there was very spotty service in a limited number of places. If one was on the river, forget it - you were on the river until you reached your destination. That's not to say friendly, caring people with homes along the banks wouldn't help you in time of great stress, like rainstorms or for health reasons.
This is a loving, caring, unique area. Now you know why we rush back year after year.
