We begin our summer sojourn

We arrived at New River State Park just before Memorial Day. We enjoyed a week at Lake Hartwell camping (Georgia). We loved Lake Hartwell, and we will try to visit again in the fall on our way home.
Shortly upon our arrival in NC, we took a ranger-led canoe trip. The weather looked bad all morning, thunder, dark clouds, some showers - the typical summer in the mountains. Fortunately, the ranger held off cancelling, and it cleared just as we put into the river.
Jamie is our new volunteer coordinator/ranger and a pleasure to work with. She loves the river and is very knowledgeable.
I'd like to tell you a bit about the New River. Based on fossil evidence, it is believed to be one of the oldest rivers in North America. It existed before the mountains through which it now passes, and its waters have followed essentially the same course for millions of years. The designated scenic segment of the river, 26.5 miles, flows north (yes, I said north) to Virginia. It continues its unusual northward flow through southwestern Virginia and West Virginia into the Kanawha and Ohio rivers. Its waters eventually reach the Gulf of Mexico by way of the Mississippi River. Actually, New River State Park consists of the designated portion of the river and the property the state has managed to acquire along its banks.
We are at the headquarters, where there are 2 campgrounds - one primitive for tents and the other with hookups. More later.
