Abingdon - "Arts of Historic Proportions" - was founded in 1778. There are buildings dating back to the 18th century.
It is home to the world-famous Barter Theatre, The State Theatre of Virginia, with well-known actors - Gregory Peck & Patricia Neal - among its many alumni. It got its name from the practice of trading produce and food for the price of admission during the Great Depression and has existed over 70 years. A troupe of actors wanted to have a theatre and realized that people could not pay for admission during the hard times.
If you want to feel a part of the area, you might want to stay overnight at the Martha Washington Inn (for a hefty price). It is well worth a walk through the lobby and a stroll on the grounds.
